By teaming up, HACARUS and Mitsubishi Electric are working on automating the quality inspection process for industrial machines. Using artificial intelligence can drastically improve the speed and accuracy of the inspection process, otherwise performed manually by human inspectors. Using a combination of high-resolution cameras and AI, the solution is expected to shorten inspection times and eliminate variance caused by human errors.
The incorporation of AI systems in the manufacturing sector has been attempted for several years, however, progress has been slow due to several challenges surrounding conventional AI methods, such as deep learning. Although powerful, deep learning is heavily restrained by its need for large amounts of training data. Preparing and processing high volumes of data is time-intensive. Cost and operational issues are also raised because system integration with existing machinery is often difficult.
To overcome these challenges, HACARUS is offering an extremely lightweight AI system, utilizing Sparse Modeling technology. By employing this technology, Mitsubishi Electric’s manufacturing machine can now inspect component quality (e.g. shape or cross-sectional condition) with up to 98% accuracy using minimal amounts of training data. HACARUS’ lightweight AI design also allows the AI system to be trained and run on edge devices, making it possible to process data without a GPU and facilitates easy integration with existing equipment.
The collaboration between HACARUS and Mitsubishi Electric started in 2019, when Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (hereafter, Mitsubishi Electric) and Globis Co., Ltd. held the “Mitsubishi Electric Acceleration Program 2019,” an initiative that utilizes open innovation in the FA (factory automation) field.
This program promotes Mitsubishi Electric’s value creation efforts in four areas that include many issues; everyday life, industry, infrastructure and mobility. This is an initiative aimed at the new coexistence and realization of machines and society.
HACARUS proposes automation of production sites using its proprietary AI engine. As a result, it was selected as one of the best start-up companies. In this way, a joint development project between HACARUS and Mitsubishi Electric was launched.

Mitsubishi Electric has a rich history of supporting Japan’s manufacturing industry. The creation of an effective visual inspection system is another step towards the future of the industry, where manufacturing processes are even more efficient and optimized. This is especially relevant in recent years, with Japan’s falling birth rates and an aging population have created worker shortages, and it is becoming more difficult to sustain a fleet of specialized workers.
To sustain productivity even with these trends, Mitsubishi Electric is actively exploring “unconventional” methods and technologies by partnering with innovative start-up companies. As one of these start-ups, HACARUS was chosen for its extensive visual inspection technology and AI systems knowledge.
By combining Mitsubishi Electric’s wealth of manufacturing knowledge and HACARUS’ AI capabilities, both firms will continue to bring higher production efficiency to the manufacturing industry. Mitsubishi Electric has high hopes and expectations for its collaboration with HACARUS to bring “the future of manufacturing” into reality.
HACARUS INC., founded in 2014, in Kyoto, Japan is the leading provider of big insights from small data, backed by Miyako Capital (Kyoto University) among others. Its solutions are used in the Medical and Manufacturing fields to enable humans to make better, faster, and more reliable decisions, based on AI-driven insights. HACARUS’ proprietary AI engine is built using Sparse Modeling, an AI method that understands data like a human would – by its unique key features and is far more resource, time and energy-efficient compared to deep learning.
