Hacarus Awarded NEDO Grant To Develop True Edge AI

Grant to fund development of AI capable both of training and inference on the edge

AUG 7, Kyoto, Japan – Hacarus Inc., the leading provider of human centric AI today announced that its been selected by NEDO (the New Energy and Development Organization), Japan’s largest governmental R&D organization, to receive a grant that will enable the development of True Edge AI – capable of both training and inference on the Edge.

Current  Edge AI solutions are typically built using “Deep Learning”, a data and resource heavy AI technique, that requires the training to be cloud based – only inference is done on the edge side. This inefficient approach means that when a deployed AI model needs to be updated, sensitive data must first be transferred to the cloud for re-training, before it can be deployed on the device again. In addition to being both time and energy consuming, there are serious data privacy and security concerns with the requirement for constant cloud connectivity.

To solve this issue, Hacarus will, with the NEDO grant, build an AI solution capable of providing True Edge AI – including both training and inference on the edge. This is a world first, which Hacarus is seeking patent protection for.

By keeping all critical AI components on the edge this solution remedies the concerns over sharing sensitive personal or product data with the cloud. Being able to re-train on the edge also means that deployed models will be able to adjust to changing conditions in real-time, ensuring constant high accuracy, despite any alterations in the environment, such as changing camera conditions or production output. Hacarus solution will support image and time series data for analysis and able to run on FPGA, Xilinx, Altera and ARM hardware. 

The first demonstrations of the new solution will be displayed in Q1 2020.
