The leading mind behind the PlayStation’s SoC to lead development of Hacarus Edge AI solutions
September, 2nd, 2019 – Kyoto, Japan – Hacarus Inc, the leading provider of lightweight and explainable AI, today announced that it has expanded its senior engineering management team with the appointment of Haruyuki Tago, who will lead Hacarus development of true Edge AI, as its new Edge Evangelist.
“Haruyuki is an absolute giant in the System-on-Chip (SoC) and Edge world – I am very excited to be able to bring this great mind to our growing team.” said Kenshin Fujiwara, Founder and CEO, Hacarus.
Mr. Tago bring over 40 years of international experience from senior management roles across firms such as Sony, Toshiba and IBM in microprocessor and SoC design management to Hacarus. He contributed greatly to the SoC designs which power the Sony PlayStations’ gaming consoles, as a member of the management team.
With Mr. Tago’s management of a globally dispersed team of hundreds of engineers both the “Emotion Engine” and the “Cell”, the main CPU of the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 respectively, were developed.
“Most AI solutions in the market today are using deep learning-based technology – which isn’t designed for the edge – it’s a data and resource hungry technique that requires cloud connectivity to function. Hacarus approach keeps data at edge-side for processing, without sending it to the cloud. This greatly increases the data security and achieves high and stable performance – I am looking forward to leading Hacarus team to build the world’s first true edge AI solution” said Haruyuki Tago.
Prior to joining Hacarus Mr. Tago served as Principal Engineer and Research Consultant at world renowned Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, working on architecture research for low-power SoC design, and framework development of deep learning accelerators for mobile SoC – technology that’s now making its way to Taiwanese companies in the high tech-scene, and is widely praised, including the recipient of a R&D 100 award.
“As soon as I learned about Hacarus, its Explainable AI technology and unique Sparse Modeling approach, I wanted to learn more. Getting to know the team, the technology and culture, marked by close corporation between the business and engineering teams, which in my experience is the fundament for creating an environment for innovation, made me confident that there was a good fit. Working at Hacarus I’d like to utilize my expertise from several joint developments with customers and support young colleagues as much as possible. After several years in Taiwan at ITRI I thought that it was time for a new challenge brining me back to my native Japan.” said Haruyuki Tago.
Mr. Tago will be working out of Hacarus Kyoto Headquarters and lead the Edge team focused on building true Edge AI, capable of both training and inference on the edge. The first demonstration of the new, patent pending solution, will be in Q1 2020.
Hacarus Inc. founded 2014, in Kyoto, Japan is the leading provider of explainable lightweight AI Tools, backed by Miyako Capital (Kyoto University) among others. Its solutions are used in the Medical and Manufacturing fields to enable humans to make better, faster and more reliable decisions, based on AI driven insights. Hacarus proprietary AI engine is built using Sparse Modeling, an AI method that understands data like a human would – by its unique key features and is far more resource, time and energy efficient compared to deep learning.
